Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby!

what is sex therapy

Sex, for many, is a taboo topic. Which means it probably isn’t talked about as much as it should be. If you were taught that you just don’t talk about sex, there is a chance that you probably don’t talk about it in your relationships (or you might not be comfortable talking about it). Talking about sex with your partner is such a positive habit to incorporate in your relationship for so many reasons!

To be honest, the best way to get comfortable with talking about sex with your partner, is to just DO IT! The more you talk about sex, the more enjoyable, and easy, those conversations become. Being able to openly and honestly talk with your partner about this, can really benefit your sexual experiences, and your connection.

When first starting the conversation with your partner, make sure you are aware of when a good time would be; in the middle of the work day, is probably not the best time! If you feel you might struggle with this conversation, write out some bullet points so you remember what you want to say. When speaking with your partner about your sexual experiences, make sure to focus more on what you DO like. If you focus on what you don’t like, it could turn the conversation to a negative place. As with any important conversation, make sure you are providing an opportunity for your partner to speak, and really listen to what they have to say as well.

Talking about sex does not always have to be a serious or formal conversation. Once you get more comfortable talking about it, you will easily be able to bring this topic up without any hesitation, or much future planning. It is essential to have open and direct communication when speaking with your partner about this. Need help with communication in your relationship? Schedule an appointment with me here

Here is a homework assignment to help you get more comfortable talking about sex with your partner. Sit and really think (or write down), in detail, a fantasy you have. Think about this fantasy from the start to end of the experience. After deciding what this fantasy is, share it with your partner. Encourage your partner to share one of their fantasies with you too.
